I am a fifth year civil engineering student at Cal Poly Pomona expecting to graduate in June of 2016. Originally I had wanted to go into computer science having completed courses in java and C++ during high school. However, on watching a documentary on the state of American infrastructure I changed my goals. My main interest in civil engineering is in traffic management and urban development. In my spare time I enjoy working on personal projects and reading. My favorite subjects are historical narrative, economics, politics, and ethics.
After graduating I plan on entering the private sector of transportation engineering. Within four years I hope to get a master’s degree as well as a PE. After that I plan on either changing into the public sector or perusing a law degree and changing career paths.
Being in a leadership position I learned the importance of having a plan. The team won’t make any progress if the leader doesn’t know what is going on and more importantly what is happening next. Additionally, I learned the importance of being able to learn brand new computer skills. When we started everyone in the group only knew one piece of relevant software that we ended up not using. Instead we learned six new pieces of software which ranged from traffic analysis to geometric visualization. From what I have gathered being able to adapt and learn entirely new pieces of software is as important a skill as the software themselves.
