A Folded Diamond Interchange is a conventional interchange type that has two standard long ramps as off-ramps and two loop ramps as on-ramps. This interchange type allows for volumes of flow similar to the tight diamond to be handled, but without taking land in every quadrant of the interchange.

A Synchro Analysis was conducted on the Folded Diamond Interchange to determine whether or not it was capable of handling the predicted 2040 traffic volumes. Initially the analysis was run to determine whether or not the interchange configuration was capable of improving the level of service for the interchange. Although the interchange did improve the level of service from an F to a D and E this is not an acceptable level of service. The improvement was because some of the high-volume left-turns were diverted into right-turns which reduced the number of impediments to the highest volume across bridge through traffic. Unfortunately the increase in required right-turns was not being off-set by an increase in available ramps thus resulting in delays. For this reason the Folded Diamond Interchange was not a viable interchange alternative.

Viability

The Folded Diamond Interchange failed the traffic analysis step in our selection process with an unaccetable level of service.  Therefore it is not considered viable and was rejected at that step.
