Existing Park & Ride

As can be seen in the image below the existing park & ride's location is in conflict with the alternative designs. For this reason the park & ride facility will need to be re-located and re-designed.

The existing park & ride facility has 72 standard and 4 handicap angled parking spots (see below). There is one bus port located on the northern side of the facility.

Park & Ride Re-Designs

The park & ride facility was re-designed with the following design consideration in mind:

  • Under 300' walk from furthest parking spot to bus stop

  • 90+ Standard 9'x20' parking spots and at least 6 Handicap 13'20' parking spots

  • Design must take into consideration future development

  • Design must be located near existing location

  • Follows Riverside County Design Standards and Considerations

The first re-design considered was similar to the rectangular configuration existing. However, there is not enough horizontal distance between the interchange ramp and the local road (not shown in satellite imagery, but located where dirt strip on the East size is) for this configuration. Two other designs were drawn up and presented below.

The advantage of this design is that it is similar to the existing park & ride facility, the parking lot serving as a large loop. Additionally having the bus inside the parking lot provides additional shelter from local road traffic. This deisng has 6 handicap parking spots and 94 standard parking spots. A major disadvantage is that having the bus stop in the back puts it further away from pedestrian access. Also, this design takes up a large amount of space in the back due to the large lane width required for bus turning radii.

Bus Stop Inside Parking Lot
Bus Turnout Design

The advantate of this design is that having a bus turnout dramatically reduces the amount of space required in the back. Another advantage is that this design can easily be included in any future development in the rest of the quadrant. Only signage would be required to designate these parking spots as Park & Ride Only parking spots. There are 6 handicap spots and 93 standard parking spots. A disadvantage of this design is that the bus turnout reduces the amount of space a bus has to get up to speed with the local flow of traffic. Additionally there is a reduction in the amount of space available for pedestrians waiting for the bus.

As mentioned in the project purpose & needs the park and ride facility located to the North-East of the interchange will need to be relocated. New park & ride facilities were created and spaced out to fit within a recommended position by the new interchange.
