Robert Harmon
My name is Robert Harmon and I’m a 5th year undergraduate graduating in June of 2016. I’ll be graduating with honors with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. These five years have been a challenging and rewarding experience for me. I’ve had the pleasure of learning about engineering and how interesting and rewarding it can be. Some highlights from my schooling include being elected officer in the school’s Institute of Transportation Engineer’s student chapter, representing Cal Poly Pomona at the California Transportation Foundation’s Education Symposium, and being project manager for this project. Outside of school I enjoy spending time golfing, reading, and fishing.
After graduation I plan to switch my emphasis to structures and work full time for Parson’s structural department. In the fall of 2017 I will begin a graduate program in Structural Engineering. I’ve found structures very interesting so far and hope one day I can look back and admire the amazing projects I’ve been a part of.
This project has been a good learning experience for me. Having a management position for a group of people has given me a perspective on what it means to be a leader and what it entails. From a people perspective I got to work with a variety of personalities and work habits, learned individuals strengths and weaknesses, and delegated tasks accordingly. From a work perspective I got to experience scheduling, meeting accelerated deadlines, and trying to complete the project while learning how to do it. From a leadership standpoint I got to practice being the type of person I would want a leader to be and trying to lead without any authority to really back it up. This will help me be a better leader in the future and better serve the leaders I will have.
