Joshua Park
My name is Joshua Park and I am graduating from Cal Poly Pomona with a Bachelor’s of Science Civil Engineering degree in June 2016.
I am uncertain about my future path as a civil engineer in regards to a specific discipline. I may attend a graduate college to receive a Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering. I am also interested in construction management so I may find a position as a project engineer. I hope through continual exposure to work experience and advice from mentors that I will come to a solidified career path.
Some of the major lessons that I have learned from the project that will help make me an engineer and a better person includes communication and larger scale impacts. To expand, communication was critical throughout all phases of the project as we constantly needed each other’s feedback and critique in order to progress effectively and efficiently. The traffic team and geometric team always needed to be in sync to make sure that the alternatives were able to handle traffic volumes while satisfying geometric standards as well. Larger scale impacts were important as geometric design was not the only aspect of the project. I began to realize that my geometric designs also had impacts onto the community more than just handling traffic volumes. I had to accommodate for driver expectation and comfortability, as well as looking out for potential areas where businesses and local facilities may be negatively affected by my design.
